PNG-8 vs PNG-24

PNG comes in two main flavors: PNG-8 and PNG-24. The number refers to the bit depth, which drastically affects both the number of colors available and the final file size.

PNG-8 PNG-24

Advantages

  • Very small file sizes
  • Great for simple graphics and logos

Disadvantages

  • Limited to only 256 colors
  • Can cause color banding in gradients
  • Harsh transparent edges (sometimes)

Advantages

  • Supports 16 million colors
  • Perfect, smooth alpha transparency
  • Lossless quality for complex graphics

Disadvantages

  • Much larger file sizes than PNG-8
